One truth: there has never been a better time to be born with an extra 21st Chromosome than the 21st Century (TM). Life expectancy has more than doubled since the 1980’s and individuals with Down syndrome have never before led such inclusive, full lives.
One tip: connect with your local parent support organization. Not all affiliates (as they are referred to) are created the same, but through Down Syndrome Affiliates in Action, more affiliates are offering robust programming and are reaching a level of professionalism than ever before. Professional guidelines recognize the value of connecting with fellow families, which most easily is done through your local affiliate.

I wrote a children’s book about my son with Down syndrome. It has helped parents talk about their special children with the siblings. Adults learn from my book also. It’s titled Dude Has Downs. I’m working on another book, for World down Syndrome Day, March 21, titled, “Different Races, Same Faces’ inspired by doctor’s visits where all races come and we never see race.
